As I watched the news this weekend, I was left with many thoughts, emotions and feelings. I also realized how many family and friends I have who teach our children. I guess I'm just really lucky because I think teachers by nature are some of the most giving people in this world.
We think we are sending our children to school to learn. But at the end of the day, all that we really care about is that they come home safe. Its easy to forget this, and I have been thinking about what teachers really mean to my daughter Abby.
In her 6 year old eyes, teachers are rock stars. They rate right up there with mom and dad, and grandparents and princesses. Every day, Abby stops to hug her Kindergarten teacher in the morning before she walks to her first grade classroom to hug her first grade teacher. Her teachers are inspiring creativity, guiding her social and emotional development and of course teaching her new things every day. But if you ask her about her day, you aren't going to hear about most of that.
She will remember the teacher who noticed her crying softly as she walked back to class after recess with a broken arm last year. The nurse who sat with her while she waited for us to get there. She will tell you about the teacher's aide who pushes her and a friend on the swings every day. And the teacher who hugs her when she's missing her mommy.
As our children return to school this week, I am more aware of the responsibility we have given them. To CARE for our children the way that we would. My heart and mind is with you and I thank you for accepting one of the most important jobs in the world!
